Currently exhibited at our event "The Collector" in Tiong Bahru, this large Japanese cabinet in mulberry wood heightened by a delicate lacquer work, is part of a rare corpus of chest made in the 17th century, some of them exported to wealthy Dutch clients.
One similar cabinet, from the same workshop and possibly part of the same command, is currently on sale in the united Kingdom (https://boxhouse-antiques.com/a-fine-and-rare-17th-century-japanese-mulberrywood-gilt-lacquer-cabinet/,. Additional information can be found from the dealer's curatorial research on the manufacturing of this kind of precious furniture.
Our cabinet, which we found in Bordeaux, is in excellent condition though not yet cleaned and waxed. We will be looking for a solution regarding stand, so that the cabinet can be used in a more practical way.
